Ability and Disability
There is a high chance that you know one or more people with a disability but do not realise they have it. Not all disabilities are visible. People with disabilities are often stereotyped or identified by what they cannot do, not what they can do.
Many people have an ‘us and them’ attitude towards those with a disability. One in five Australians will experience some form of mental illness in their lifetime.
Disability, its symptoms and its associated experiences are as diverse as we are individual. It can be difficult to understand or imagine the personal journey of someone with a disability. Digital stories and storytelling through film and books give us valuable insights into the complex issues surrounding disability.
