Recommended for Year 9 to Year 11. Alfred was a despatch rider during World War II. He served in Malaya and was captured by the Japanese to become a prisoner of war. He describes how the Japanese rounded up young Chinese and shot them. 'Weary' Dunlop treated Alfred when he became ill on the Thai-Burma railway. He describes his labour in the Nagasaki shipyards and the aftermath of the atomic bomb.
