In 2002 the United Nations Mission of Support to East Timor was established with the aim of developing the nation’s economic independence. East Timor was internationally recognised as an independent nation on 20th May 2002. Mohammed Abdur Rahman, a Victorian Veteran, tells the story of a 6 month East Timor peacekeeping operation where he saw a devastated country slowly recover and gain economic independence.
